Traditional local festival in Mettenheim with flower-decorated houses, clubs, and village community
Mettenheim is located in southern Rhenish Hesse, in the Eich collective municipality, between Worms and Alzey. The village has around 1500 inhabitants and is surrounded by vineyards, fields, and small riparian forests along the Eisbach river. The village center with its typical Rhenish-Hessian houses, the rectory, and the church provides the ideal backdrop for village festivals with a family character.
The name of the festival recalls the 'Blumensiedlungen' (flower settlements) that emerged in many Rhenish-Hessian villages in the 1950s and 1960s. These residential areas with their lovingly maintained front gardens, where roses, hollyhocks, geraniums, and summer flowers bloomed, were an expression of new civic pride and a sense of home. The Blumensiedlerfest builds on this tradition and celebrates the pride of the Mettenheim residents in their town, their houses, and their gardens. Today, the festival is less a concrete reference to a specific settlement and more a fond remembrance of village values and well-kept neighborliness.
The festival is organized and catered by local clubs. On the tables are the classics of Rhenish-Hessian festival cuisine: grilled sausages, 'Spundekäs' (cheese dip) with pretzels, 'Saumagen' (stuffed pig's stomach), onion cake, coffee, and homemade cakes. At the wine stands, Mettenheim vintners serve their own wines – Riesling, Silvaner, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Rosé. A small stage provides musical accompaniment with dialect music, Schlager hits, and cover versions.
The Blumensiedlerfest is deliberately designed to be family-friendly. Children find play areas, grandparents meet old acquaintances, and for adults, it's an opportunity to come together in a relaxed atmosphere. Those looking for an authentic impression of Rhenish-Hessian village culture, without the hustle and bustle of the larger 'Kerwen' (church festivals), will find just the right mix here.
