Germany's largest festival for contemporary circus — three tents on Tempelhofer Feld
What was long considered a provincial circus scene has developed into a top European festival over ten years: according to organizers and the trade press, the Berlin Circus Festival is now the largest festival for contemporary circus in Germany. 'Neuer Zirkus', 'cirque contemporain', 'nouveau cirque' — these terms describe a form that is neither a classic animal-led ring nor pure acrobatics, but rather stage art where peak physical performance serves as a vehicle for storytelling. With productions from France, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Nordic countries, and increasingly Germany, the festival presents around twenty shows annually.
The organizers have expanded their infrastructure over the years: three tents of various sizes for the main stage productions, plus an open-air stage for free daytime performances. The location is the expansive Tempelhofer Feld — a former airport with 386 hectares of space, used as a public park since 2010. The festival backdrop in Berlin could hardly be more spectacular.
The 12th edition will take place from August 5 to 16, 2026. The complete program will be published by the organizer berlin-circus-festival.de starting June 1, 2026 — according to the press release, featuring 'renowned productions, spectacular shows, and great talents' from all over Europe. Tickets go on sale with the program release.
