Culture and City Festival on the Marienberg
At a good 68 meters, the Marienberg is the highest point in the Havel city of Brandenburg and has historically been a central location: it once housed the landmark St. Marien, today it is home to the Friedensgarten (Peace Garden) with the Friedensdenkmal (Peace Monument), and it offers the widest view over the city, its islands, and the Havel lakes. Once a year, Bergfest turns this location into a festival ground – a format that closely links the city's identity with its geography.
The organizer is Zirkus Creativo e.V., located at Wallstraße 20. The association has been active in the city's independent cultural scene for years, runs circus education programs for children and young people, and brings its circus tent to the Marienberg for Bergfest. The tent becomes the central event space, hosting performances, workshops, talks, and participatory activities.
The festival program includes live performances by regional artists, workshops and hands-on activities (from circus education to creative workshops), a beach volleyball tournament on the festival grounds, and a regional market shopping street featuring vendors from Brandenburg an der Havel and the surrounding area. Admission is free – donations and sales at the stalls help finance the event.
Bergfest is part of Brandenburg an der Havel's rich summer festival season, alongside the DRØP Festival, Hörspielwochenende (Radio Play Weekend), and Sommerkino (Summer Cinema). Those wishing to discover Brandenburg an der Havel as a culturally diverse medium-sized city should include Bergfest in their summer plans.
