Traditional Mountain Thanksgiving Festival of the Harz Miners' Association Goslar on February 18, 2026 β Mountain Parade from Frankenberg, Ceremony and Tscherperessen in memory of mining at Rammelsberg
Goslar's history is inextricably linked to mining at Rammelsberg. For over 1,000 years β from the 10th century to 1988 β ore was continuously mined at Rammelsberg. This extraordinary mining tradition made Goslar one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities of the medieval empire and continues to shape the city's identity to this day. Since 1992, the Rammelsberg mine, the old town of Goslar, and the Upper Harz water management system have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
The Harzer Knappenverein Goslar e.V. is the central guardian organization of mining tradition in Goslar. The association unites former miners, their descendants, and those interested in mining history. Members appear at traditional events in historically accurate mining uniforms β black with silver buttons, mining cloaks, mining leather, shaft hats, and lamps. This visible presence keeps the tradition alive and passes it on to subsequent generations.
The Bergdankfest begins at 11:15 AM with the mountain parade, which starts from Frankenberg β one of the historic mining sites in Goslar. The miners in uniform march through the historic city center, past the Imperial Palace, the market square, and the characteristic half-timbered buildings. Mining bands or music associations accompany the procession with traditional miners' music. The parade is not only a visual spectacle but a moving act of remembrance for the generations of miners who worked underground.
The ceremony, featuring speeches, honors, and cultural contributions, takes place in the Lindenhof β one of Goslar's traditional venues. Representatives of the Miners' Association, the city of Goslar, associations, and dignitaries honor the mining history and the significance of living tradition. It is a festive act that underscores the official character of the occasion.
The Bergdankfest concludes with the Tscherperessen β the traditional miners' meal. The term 'Tscherper' refers to a specific miner's knife, and the Tscherperessen is the communal meal of the miners with traditional dishes. The gathering after the parade and ceremony brings together members of the Miners' Association and guests, concluding the festive day in a convivial atmosphere.
The 2026 edition continues the long tradition. Miners in historical uniforms march through the World Heritage city of Goslar, and the ceremony in the Lindenhof honors the importance of mining at Rammelsberg for the city and its inhabitants.
