Music against the backdrop of dunes and beach
What distinguishes the Concerts on the Baltrum Promenade from comparable concert series is the setting. While urban concerts have to contend with the noise of traffic arteries and light pollution in the night sky, concerts here take place in an absolutely tranquil environment: dunes at your back, mudflats to the side, not a single car, no traffic, no artificial noises – just music, the wind, and the distant roar of the surf.
Venues on the island
The concerts are spread across two main locations:
- Promenade – Open-air concerts directly on the beach, overlooking the mudflats. In good weather, larger concerts are held here, often in the late afternoon at sunset.
- Haus des Gastes – Concert hall for weather-dependent concerts and programs with a higher artistic standard (chamber music, piano recitals, song recitals).
The regular musical guests
The concert series focuses on regional musicians who are connected to Baltrum year-round:
- Baltrum Shanty Choir – one of the best-known island choirs in East Frisia. Pure maritime tradition, from "What shall we do with the drunken sailor" to Low German songs.
- Fleitjes van Baltrum – the island ensemble plays a mix of folk, popular music, and original maritime compositions.
- Singer-songwriters from East Frisia and the North German region with their own works and occasional cover versions.
- Guest musicians from the neighboring islands of Norderney, Juist, Langeoog, who perform as part of internal island exchange initiatives.
Atmosphere and access
Most concerts are free and accessible without registration. Events on the beach take place in a pleasant summer atmosphere – visitors bring beach chairs, blankets, or sit on the promenade steps. A nearby bar or snack stand provides drinks. Concerts in the Haus des Gastes have a more formal character, often with seating and occasionally for a small entrance fee or with the presentation of the spa card.
