Bavarian Flair in the Pyrmont City Centre with Beer Barrel Tapping, Delicacies, and Sunday Shopping
The Bad Pyrmont Oktobermarkt has established itself as a popular autumn event over the years. What began as a small homage to Munich's Oktoberfest is now a three-day Volksfest (public festival) that enlivens the city centre and attracts visitors from the entire Hameln-Pyrmont district, as well as from Ostwestfalen-Lippe and Hesse. The event is organised by Bad Pyrmont Tourismus GmbH in cooperation with local restaurateurs and the city marketing association.
On Friday, September 18th, at 6:30 PM, the Oktobermarkt traditionally begins with the tapping of the first beer barrel by Mayor Klaus Blome. With a few strong blows, the first barrel is tapped and the first Maß (litre) of beer is poured. The opening ceremony is accompanied by a brass band performance and short speeches. The official opening has been a meeting point for the citizens of Pyrmont for years.
Beer tents and stalls line Brunnenstraße for the entire duration of the festival. Weißwurst, Leberkäse, Schweinshaxe, Schweinebraten, pretzels, sauerkraut, and potato salad are standard offerings of Bavarian cuisine. Rotating bands and solo artists provide the musical accompaniment: traditional brass music during the day, Schlager stars in the evening, and folk music sets on Sunday morning. Beer benches and standing tables invite visitors to linger.
On Sunday, September 20th, from 1 PM to 6 PM, there will be a Sunday shopping event in the centre of Bad Pyrmont. Shops along Brunnenstraße and in the surrounding alleys will open their doors, taking the opportunity to offer autumn collections, special promotions, and Sunday deals. The combination of the Oktobermarkt and Sunday shopping makes it one of the busiest days in Pyrmont's festival calendar.
The Oktobermarkt is aimed at all generations. For children, there is a small swing carousel and confectionery stands. Families will find ample space in the beer tents, and seniors can enjoy the brass music and the convivial atmosphere. The central location and short distance to the train station make travel easy.
The Bad Pyrmont Oktobermarkt continues its long-standing tradition, bringing Bavarian flair to the Lower Saxony Weser Uplands from September 18th to 20th. The final music and gastronomy lineup will be published by the organiser in late summer 2026.
Highlights include the opening on Friday evening and the Sunday shopping event in the city centre.
