Atmospheric Christmas market in the UNESCO World Heritage spa town of Bad Ems around the Kurhaus and Römerquelle
Bad Ems is one of the most important spa ensembles in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021. In the 19th century, emperors, artists, diplomats, and European high society gathered here for cures – Emperor Wilhelm I made the town his preferred summer residence. This history is palpable in every stone of the historic spa district to this day.
The Christmas market thoughtfully utilizes this atmosphere. Instead of a loud, massive market, Bad Ems focuses on pre-Christmas elegance: a compact number of stalls, a carefully curated selection, and atmospheric lighting on the historic facades of the Kurhaus and the Römerquelle.
The stall offerings include handicrafts and artisanal products: nativity scenes, jewelry, woodwork, pottery, woolens. Culinary delights with mulled wine, punch, cookies, bratwurst, crêpes, often complemented by regional and French specialties.
The location around the Kurhaus and Römerquelle, on the Lahn river and overlooking the wooded slopes, creates a particularly calm, almost intimate atmosphere. Those who wish to avoid the hustle and bustle of large city center markets will find a charming alternative here.
The market can be combined with a visit to the historic Kurhaus, a walk along the Lahn riverbank, or a ride on the funicular (seasonal). For current information, contact the Bad Ems-Nassau Tourist Information and Staatsbad Bad Ems.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the atmospheric market in the UNESCO World Heritage site. The historic Kurhaus backdrop makes the Bad Ems Christmas Market a special Advent experience on the Middle Rhine.
