Summer funfair on a 10,000 square meter amusement park at the Talweiher
Anyone who grew up in Birkenfeld most likely has childhood memories of the Kirmes-Park am Talweiher. The August weekend of the summer funfair is one of the major festival dates for the district town and has become a firm meeting point for families from the entire Birkenfeld district and the adjacent Saarland over the years. The Talweiherplatz, an open space on the outskirts of town, offers room for around ten thousand square meters of festival activity, clearly distinguishing it from inner-city funfairs that suffer from cramped conditions.
The range of rides combines classic standards with larger attractions that can also be seen at larger Volksfeste in the region. Dodgems and several carousels of various sizes cater to the needs of toddlers to teenagers. A Ferris wheel or a comparable high-altitude attraction complements the offering depending on the booking status of the showman's association. Shooting galleries, game stalls, sweet stands, and smaller gambling machines are lined up between the large rides. The food stalls offer classic funfair fare: bratwurst, currywurst, fries, doughnuts, almonds, cotton candy, and candied peanuts, alongside crepes and smaller savory specialties.
The town of Birkenfeld coordinates the funfair in cooperation with the showman's guild. The exact date for 2026 has not yet been confirmed at the time of going to press, but the festival traditionally takes place on the second weekend in August – for 2026, this would mean a date around August 7th to 9th. Confirmed information, opening hours, and detailed program will be published by the town on its website in the summer.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years: setup in the days before the festival weekend, opening on Friday afternoon, festival operation throughout the weekend, often with extended opening hours on Saturday. It is a classic showman's funfair without a fixed stage program; the atmosphere is characterized by the rides and the typical soundscapes of folk festival music.
