Grand parade on the first Backfischfest Sunday through Worms city centre with subsequent parade party
The Worms Backfischfest is one of the largest folk and wine festivals on the Rhine, lasting nine days. But the one programme item that attracts thousands of additional visitors beyond the usual marquee entertainment is the festival parade on the first Sunday. For over two hours, floats and walking groups parade through Worms city centre – the city is gripped by a unique folk festival atmosphere on this day.
Various groups participate in the festival parade: The Worms carnival societies (WCG Liederkranz 1875, Wormser Narrhalla 1840, Griwwelbisser, Prinzengarde Gloria 02, WCC 1974, Hausfrauen-Verein) with their guards and show dancers, and floats. Worms sports clubs, parish communities, shooting clubs, carnival and tradition associations. Marching bands with drums, pipes, and lyres. Traditional costume groups from the Worms area. Wine and Festival Queens with their courts. Worms showman floats with creatively decorated platforms. Affiliated clubs from neighbouring Rheinhessen municipalities. In total, the parade typically comprises 80 to 100 groups with several hundred active participants.
The exact route will be published in spring/summer. Traditionally, the parade leads from a assembly point at the main train station or Bahnhofstraße through central Worms streets to the festival grounds at Kisselswiese. The city closes affected streets to car traffic during the parade (approx. 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM); the public positions themselves along the route.
Following the parade, the festival marquees at Kisselswiese open for the parade party. DJs play in the marquees, the parade floats disperse on the festival grounds, and the Backfischfest enters its evening phase. For many parade participants, the party in the marquee is the real reward for the effort of the parade.
Registration for clubs, companies, groups, and showmen is free and runs until July 1st, 2026, via the website backfischfest.de. Clubs usually receive financial and logistical support from the City of Worms.
