Beach feeling festival in Dortmund East — 80 tons of sand on the school parking lot
Are you a family in Dortmund-Asseln or the eastern Ruhr area and don't feel like flying south for a three-day beach vacation? The premiere of Asselner Strand offers you the Caribbean with subway connection. In May 2026, the parking lot of the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium school center in Dortmund-Asseln will become an improvised beach oasis — 80 tons of sand, palm trees, beach bars, cocktails, live music, and a family program. Free admission. A premiere for the neighborhood format in the eastern Ruhr area.
Asselner Strand aims to be more than a classic neighborhood festival. Instead of beer tents and club stalls, the organizers are focusing on a real beach staging: sand on the asphalt, palm trees, beach bars, wooden loungers, Caribbean-inspired cocktails, and tortilla stands. Three days of programming, from the extended weekend evening to Sunday afternoon, with different focuses each day.
Friday is the kickoff — soft opening in the afternoon, official opening with keg tapping by District Mayor Dirk Sanke at 5 p.m., live concerts from 6 p.m. with the Sunshine Coconuts (Steel-Drums) and the Furumba Band (Latin/Caribbean).
Saturday focuses on sports and party — from 1 p.m. a beach volleyball tournament in 2-vs-2 mode (free participation) will take place, and in the evening the band Latino Total will play live. The day is explicitly aimed at a younger and sporty audience.
Sunday is dedicated to the family — a Caribbean treasure hunt for children starts at 1 p.m., students from the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium will do face painting, a bouncy castle will be available, and for adults there will be a paid Rum Tasting (€25, registration at [email protected]). The band Los Romberos will provide musical entertainment in the afternoon from 2 p.m.
Asseln is a district in the east of Dortmund and belongs to the Brackel district. The district is predominantly residential, with good connections via the A1 motorway and the U43 subway line to Dortmund city center. With Asselner Strand, the district makes a conscious statement against the image of being a "purely residential area without its own identity" — a premiere that works with a high conceptual standard right from the start.
According to the organizers, the soft opening on Friday afternoon — despite changeable weather with showers and temperatures between 13–18 degrees Celsius — was surprisingly well attended. Those who like premieres and want to see how an empty asphalt area is transformed into an improvised Caribbean will be right at home at Asselner Strand 2026.
From May 15 to 17, 2026, the school parking lot in Dortmund-Asseln will be transformed into an improvised beach. The organizers have piled up 80 tons of sand, set up palm trees, and established beach bars — and put together a program that ranges from the Friday opening to the Sunday treasure hunt.
Admission is free on all three days. The only paid activity is the Rum Tasting on Sunday (€25, registration required). Beach volleyball tournament on Saturday in 2-vs-2 mode, participation also free of charge. The event is designed as a premiere — if successful, the format will be continued from 2027 onwards.
By subway U43 (stop Asseln Mitte) or bus 422. By car via the A1 (exit Dortmund-Süd) or A44 (exit Dortmund-Asseln). Parking is available in the residential streets around the school center.
Free admission. Beach volleyball tournament free of charge. Rum tasting on Sunday €25 (registration required: [email protected]).
Bring sunscreen (or rain protection). Loungers are available but limited — arrive early for the best spots.
