Decentralised art format of the free scene throughout the city – part of the 750th anniversary celebrations
Kaiserslautern's free art and cultural scene has been vibrant for years, but often less visible to the public than established institutions like the Pfalztheater, Pfalzbibliothek, and Kammgarn. With ARTWALK, the city, in collaboration with the free scene, is creating a format in 2026 specifically aimed at enhancing this visibility. For four days, studios, curated venues, temporary spaces in vacant shops, and public squares will open their doors. The public can embark on a self-guided tour of the city, mostly free of charge.
The programme includes visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation), music (from acoustic solo sets to electronic concerts), contemporary and urban dance, performance art, readings, and spoken word performances. Kaiserslautern's free scene is diverse; ARTWALK provides a common platform for it without homogenising the variety of approaches.
ARTWALK is part of the comprehensive programme celebrating the 750th anniversary of Kaiserslautern's town charter (1276–2026). The format aligns thematically with the anniversary year's goal of celebrating the city not only through historical ceremonies but also through contemporary cultural production. Funding from the state and the city provides the financial basis for its realisation.
An important element of the concept is its peripatetic nature: ARTWALK invites the public to explore the city on foot, moving from one venue to the next, rediscovering not only the art but also the urban spaces. Backyards, courtyards, shopfronts, and industrial areas become part of the cultural map for four days. The format thus connects with current trends in decentralised, site-specific art practice.
Four days, many venues, many voices: in 2026, ARTWALK opens up Kaiserslautern's free scene to a broad audience. The detailed programme will be published in Spring 2026.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in Spring. The structure follows the planned key points of the premiere:
Various locations throughout Kaiserslautern. Studios, public squares, vacant shops, courtyards. A programme booklet with maps will be available in Spring 2026.
Most events are free. Some performance and concert formats may have an admission fee as specified by the organiser.
Kaiserslautern city centre, venues are within walking distance of each other.
