About Architecture Pavilion Burgplatz 2026

From May 20 to July 22, 2026, a temporary architecture pavilion will be erected directly at Braunschweig Cathedral on the historic Burgplatz — a novel cultural format jointly developed by the city and the Braunschweig University of Technology. Within its 60 square meters of interior space, the pavilion will offer room for concerts, readings, performances, exhibitions, and discussion formats for two months. The winning design for the pavilion was developed by the architectural firm JUHU! Architektur (Tiede/Jensen). The pavilion is conceived as an urban experiment that connects Braunschweig's historic center with contemporary culture, urban debate, and experimental programming. Located directly by St. Blasii Cathedral and in close proximity to the statue of Henry the Lion, it creates a space where history and the present meet.

A Pavilion as an Urban Experiment

The temporary architecture pavilion at Burgplatz is one of Braunschweig's most exciting cultural initiatives in the summer of 2026. Initiated by the City of Braunschweig in cooperation with the Technical University, particularly the Institute for Architectural Related Arts (ABK) and the Faculty of Architecture, a new kind of cultural venue will be created in the heart of the city center for approximately nine weeks. The winning design was created by the young architectural firm JUHU! Architektur (Tiede/Jensen) — their vision will be realized on Burgplatz.

Directly at Burgplatz, Directly by the Cathedral

The location is deliberately chosen: Burgplatz, with its famous Lion statue, Dankwarderode Castle, and Braunschweig Cathedral of St. Blasii, is the historic heart of the city. The pavilion will be erected in close proximity to these landmarks, creating an encounter between centuries-old architecture and contemporary building. With 60 square meters of interior space, it is intentionally small and intimate — a forum, not a concert hall.

Diverse Programme

Over the nine weeks, a variety of events will take place in the pavilion and on the surrounding Burgplatz: small concerts of various genres, readings by local and national authors, performances from dance and theatre, exhibitions by young artists and the architecture university, discussion formats on urban topics, and discourse evenings with the TU. The programme is intended as an experimental platform — much will arise spontaneously, much in cooperation with local stakeholders.

Cooperation Between City and University

The cooperation between the City of Braunschweig and the TU Braunschweig is a rare model of its kind: the university contributes academic expertise, artistic practice, and student energy, while the city provides public space and organization. The pavilion is thus also a statement on the importance of science for urban life and the role of architecture in urban development.

Architecture Pavilion Burgplatz 2026 — edition 2026

The temporary architecture pavilion at Braunschweig's Burgplatz will be open from May 20 to July 22, 2026. Within its 60 square meters, it will offer a nine-week program of small concerts, readings, performances, exhibitions, and discussion formats — directly by Braunschweig Cathedral and the Lion statue. The winning design was created by JUHU! Architektur (Tiede/Jensen). A cooperation between the city and TU Braunschweig, it connects the historic city center with contemporary culture. Free admission.

City, University, Culture

The inaugural realization in 2026 makes a statement: for nine weeks, the public space of the historic city center will be transformed by a temporary structure into an experimental cultural stage.

The detailed program for 2026 will be published on braunschweig.de/kultur/kunst/architekturpavillon.
