Historic Christmas Market with Anneresl Figure and Knusperwald
Anneresl is the central figure of the Rheinzabern Christmas market and a Palatinate peculiarity: not an angel or the Christ child in the classic sense, but a local Christmas figure that combines tradition, Palatinate down-to-earthness, and childlike anticipation. Anneresl moves through the market distributing apples and nuts to children – a custom reminiscent of the old Advent tradition of the Palatinate.
The market takes place around three central buildings: the Terra Sigillata Museum, which recalls Rheinzabern's Roman past as the important pottery town of Tabernae; St. Michael's Parish Church, whose medieval substance shapes the townscape; and the historic Town Hall. This combination of Roman antiquity, Christian Middle Ages, and communal tradition gives the market an extraordinary cultural-historical depth.
The 'Knusperwald' (Crispy Forest) is a market zone specially set up for children with a children's bakery, where the youngest visitors can bake cookies under supervision. Stories for the pre-Christmas season, hands-on activities, and crafts round off the family offerings. This child-friendly concept has earned the market its reputation as one of the most family-friendly Advent markets in the southern Palatinate.
Regional exhibitors offer handicrafts, honey, jams, Palatinate wine, mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, Palatinate 'Saumagen' (pork belly stew), and sweet pastries at the stalls. The selection is carefully curated; the market focuses on regional quality rather than cheap mass-produced goods. The presence of the St. Michael parish community provides a special spiritual accent during the Advent pre-Christmas season.
