Slow Food, Edible City and Sunday Shopping – Andernach celebrates its culinary diversity
Over the past 15 years, Andernach has gained renown far beyond the region with its "Edible City" project. Instead of traditional ornamental plants, tomatoes, beans, pumpkins, herbs, and fruit trees grow in the historic city center – freely accessible to all citizens. The concept, which began in 2010, has received multiple awards and has become a model internationally.
The annual city festival "Andernach schmeckt!" is the culinary and cultural stage for this project. On Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Slow Food Rhein-Mosel, together with the Perspektive Andernach initiative, invites you to the city center. The focus is on a large Slow Food market with producers from the Rhein-Mosel region: organic farmers, beekeepers, cheese makers, bakers, brewers, vintners, and direct marketers will present their products and engage with visitors.
Culinary specialties from the region are at the heart of the event: Eifel cheese and sausage specialties, honey from the scattered orchards, Rhine wine and Mosel Riesling, regional beers, baked goods made from old grain varieties, wild herb dishes, and much more. Food trucks and mobile kitchens will complement the offerings with hot meals, also prepared as regionally and seasonally as possible.
The market will be accompanied by a cultural and educational program: guided tours of the Edible City (to the raised beds in the city center), cooking demonstrations, lectures on sustainable nutrition, workshops for children and families, as well as live music and street art. Andernach has also converted the gardens in the Kurkölnische Burg and along the city wall to permaculture – these locations can also be experienced during the city festival.
In parallel, retailers in Andernach's city center will open their doors for Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM. This combines the festival with regular city life, creating a day program that blends enjoyment, culture, and shopping experiences. Free admission.
The 2026 edition is officially announced for July 5, 2026. The concept follows the proven model: Slow Food market with regional producers, Edible City tours, cultural program, and Sunday shopping.
