24th edition of the Andernach Night of Culture – the historic old town becomes a grand stage for art, music, theatre, and gastronomy
Few events on the Middle Rhine have such a cohesive character as the Andernach Night of Culture. Since 2003, the historic old town of Andernach has transformed into a single grand cultural stage for six hours on a Saturday in early September. The 24th edition on September 5, 2026, continues this established tradition and is considered one of the highlights of the Andernach cultural summer.
The concept is as simple as it is effective: Between 6 PM and midnight, churches, galleries, museums, shops, cafés, restaurants, courtyards, and public squares open their doors for all kinds of cultural programmes. Each venue hosts a different event: live concerts of various genres (jazz, classical, folk, pop, world music), theatre performances, dance performances, comedy and cabaret acts, readings, art exhibitions, film screenings, installations, performances. Visitors move from place to place, curating their own programme.
The historic old town of Andernach provides a backdrop that is second to none in Germany: the almost completely preserved medieval city walls with the distinctive Round Tower, the 12th-century Church of Our Lady, the Old Town Hall, the Mariendom Quarter, the Mariendom with its four towers, the numerous restored townhouses, and the picturesque alleys – all are atmospherically illuminated and used for art during the Night of Culture.
The programme appeals to a broad audience: families will find child-friendly activities, culture connoisseurs can attend sophisticated concerts and readings, and those seeking social interaction can enjoy the atmosphere in the courtyards with wine, beer, and culinary specialities. Andernach's gastronomy actively participates, offering special menus, promotions, and outdoor dining.
With its free admission concept, the Andernach Night of Culture has established itself as a low-threshold cultural offering that appeals to both residents and tourists. Over the years, thousands of visitors have made their first or another contact with Andernach's rich cultural scene through the Night of Culture. For Middle Rhine tourists who choose the first weekend in September for a visit to Andernach, the Night of Culture is a must-attend event – ideally combined with an overnight stay and a geyser visit on Sunday.
The 24th edition of the Andernach Night of Culture continues a tradition that has grown over two decades. The Andernach Cultural Office coordinates dozens of venues and over a hundred artists and programme items – each year with a changing focus and new participants. A detailed programme booklet will be published at the end of August 2026 with all venues, times, and artists. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
