Late summer beer festival in Haßloch with Bavarian Andechser beer, music, and Palatinate and Bavarian specialties
The Palatinate and Bavaria have close historical ties – the Electoral Palatinate was long administered by the Kingdom of Bavaria after the Napoleonic Wars, and many Palatinate traditions bear Bavarian influences. Nevertheless, a Bavarian beer festival in a Palatinate wine village is an unusual concept – which is precisely the special appeal of the Andechser Bierfest Haßloch. Instead of Palatinate wine and Schoppen, there's Bavarian beer in Maß (liter steins), instead of Saumagen (a local specialty) there's Weißwurst (or both), and instead of Palatinate dialect, there's Bavarian band music.
Andechser beer is brewed by the brewery of the Andechs Monastery in Upper Bavaria – one of Germany's most famous monastery breweries. The monastery's Helles, Doppelbock, and Weissbier enjoy an excellent reputation among beer connoisseurs. Several varieties of Andechser beer are served at the Andechser Bierfest Haßloch, classically in Maß and half-liter steins.
The culinary offerings combine Palatinate and Bavarian classics: Weißwurst, pretzels, Leberkäse, Hendl (roast chicken), and Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) from the Bavarian repertoire, along with Saumagen, Bratwurst (sausage), Palatinate sausage salad, and Flammkuchen as Palatinate contributions. This mix is unusual and forms part of the event's charm.
The atmosphere on the festival grounds has what is known in Southern Germany as folk festival spirit: music from Bavarian band traditions – Egerländer marches, Schlager, party music – beer steins on long tables, communal singing, Palatinate and Bavarian traditional costumes mingling among the tables. Anyone who enjoys Bavarian festival culture and wants to experience it in a Palatinate setting will feel right at home here.
