Kick-off of street carnival in Bad Kreuznach with "A Cage Full of Fools" starting at 11:11 AM
Altweiberfastnacht in Bad Kreuznach begins with the traditional "Käfig voller Narren" (A Cage Full of Fools) on the Kornmarkt – punctually at 11:11 AM, in the best jester tradition. The organizer is the Kreiznacher Narrefahrt e.V., which opens the hot phase of Bad Kreuznach's street carnival on Schwerdonnerstag (Fat Thursday) with this program item. Clubs, costumed revellers, carnival guards, and music groups gather on the Kornmarkt, symbolically take over the city, and celebrate the transition into the "toll days" (carnival days).
Altweiberfastnacht, or "Schwerdonnerstag," is one of the most emotional carnival days in the Rhineland's carnival strongholds. Women symbolically cut men's ties, the city is handed over to the fools, and all conventions are suspended for a few days.
The central event of Bad Kreuznach's Altweiberfastnacht is "Ein Käfig voller Narren" – a stage show that takes place on the Kornmarkt from 11:11 AM. Carnival performers, stage speakers, dance guards, music groups, and comedy acts perform; the atmosphere is exuberant, and the audience is costumed. "Helau" echoes through the old town, confetti is thrown, and candy is distributed.
The Kreiznacher Narrefahrt e.V. is one of Bad Kreuznach's central carnival clubs and one of the driving forces behind the street carnival. The club not only organizes the "Narrenkäfig" on Schwerdonnerstag but also other program points in the carnival season – sessions, parade participations, and club activities. The name "Narrefahrt" refers to the tradition of the jesters.
Bad Kreuznach maintains a vibrant carnival tradition with several clubs: Großer Kreuznacher Gondelfahrer Karneval (GKGK 1846), KC Fidele Wespe, Blaue Jungs vom MTV, Weisse Fräck im VfL, and others. Each club contributes its own sessions, guards, and floats to the carnival season. The "Narrenkäfig" on Schwerdonnerstag officially opens the multi-day street carnival.
From Schwerdonnerstag to Faschingsdienstag (Shrove Tuesday), numerous program points follow in Bad Kreuznach: the carnival sessions of the clubs in the halls, masked balls, children's carnival, the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade), and finally, Ash Wednesday, when the jester activities end. The "Narrenkäfig" on February 12, 2026, is the unofficial starting signal.
