Three-day city festival with two stages, family day, and amusement rides in the heart of the Westrich Plateau
For over three decades, the Baumholder Old Town Festival has been one of the largest and most popular city festivals in the Birkenfeld district. The small garrison town on the edge of the military training area transforms into a continuously active festival mile at the end of August, stretching from the market square to Poststraße. Two stages ensure that the program remains varied despite the manageable dimensions of the city center: while a cover band plays on one stage, the other can be used for DJ sets or show acts.
Friday evening traditionally opens the festival with a multi-part concert program. In 2026, the Volkshauskapelle Oberkirchen and the indie rock musician Alex Breidt are announced. Saturday focuses on high dance density late into the night with the brass formation Bruise Brassers, the band Elliot, and a DJ set covering four decades of pop hits. Sunday is entirely dedicated to families: a church service on the market square kicks off the day, followed by children's activities, club performances, and an afternoon concert on the stages. The OIE family offerings with face painting, game stations, and interactive activities complement the program.
Classic amusement rides such as bumper cars, a carousel, and sweet stalls are spread around the stages. Numerous city clubs provide catering – from bratwurst and fries to Palatinate specialties, cocktails, and cold drinks, everything that makes a regional city festival is represented. The admission policy remains simple: the Old Town Festival is freely accessible all three days, as are the parking spaces in the surrounding streets.
The stage program is spread across the two main venues, the market square and Poststraße. Friday starts after work with a warm-up concert, followed by the Volkshauskapelle Oberkirchen for a lively opening, before Alex Breidt takes over with an indie rock set. Saturday is designed as a long concert evening: Bruise Brassers open with brass-pop covers, followed by Elliot, before a DJ continues with hits from four decades late into the night. Sunday is dedicated to families and clubs: a morning church service, an afternoon children's program, performances by local clubs, and a musical wind-down in the early evening.
