Traditional Brunnenkerwe in Alsterweiler, a district of Maikammer — Palatinate village festival centered around the historic village fountain
Brunnenkerwen are a distinct genre within the Palatinate Kerwe tradition. They originated at a time when village fountains were the center of community life — as a source of drinking water, a meeting place for women doing laundry, a site for daily encounters. When the annual Kirchweih was celebrated not at a central festival ground but at the village fountain, a special form of Kerwe emerged: smaller, more intimate, more closely tied to the village. The Alsterweiler Brunnenkerwe is among the surviving examples of this tradition.
Alsterweiler is a district of Maikammer but has preserved its own village identity. The Brunnenkerwe is an expression of this independence — a festival that the people of Alsterweiler celebrate for themselves and their guests, aware that the larger Maikammer festival landscape (with the prominent Maifest and the Maikammerer Weinkerwe) exists in parallel but is something different.
The central village fountain is the stage and symbol of the festival. Stalls are set up around it, and the festival activities are concentrated on the fountain square and the adjacent alleys. The vintners of Maikammer serve wines from the surrounding vineyards, and local clubs offer Palatinate specialties — Saumagen, Bratwurst, Flammkuchen — while live music accompanies the festive evenings.
The Brunnenkerwe typically spans three days, from Friday to Sunday. It opens on Friday evening, operates at full capacity over the weekend, and concludes on Sunday with a Frühschoppen (morning pint) and a relaxed wind-down. A manageable, well-kept event with genuine Palatinate charm.
The 2026 edition will adhere to the established format of the Brunnenkerwe: festival opening on Friday evening, full operation on Saturday and Sunday with classic Kerwe customs, wine service by Maikammer vintners, and Palatinate specialties.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years.
