Winter wine hike through the Alsheim vineyards with mulled wine, warm food, and winter views
Alsheim is a municipality in the district of Alzey-Worms with around 2700 inhabitants, located in the southern Wonnegau between Worms and Mainz. The village is surrounded by extensive vineyards and is one of the traditional wine-growing villages of Rhenish Hesse. While the summer months are characterized by numerous wine festivals and hikes, the winter period is usually quiet – the Alsheimer Winter-Weinwanderung breaks with this tradition and establishes a date in the quietest season.
The winter wine hike follows an unusual concept: Instead of summer conviviality under a blue sky and in warm air, the focus here is on the intimate atmosphere of the cold season. Hikers, warmly dressed, often with hats, scarves, and gloves, walk through the vineyards. At the stations, visitors warm themselves with mulled wine, punch, hot apple wine, or Federweißer and enjoy hearty warm dishes: stews, sausages, potato pancakes, and sweets like Schmalzgebäck.
What surprises many: The view in the winter vineyards is often more spectacular than in summer. Without the dense foliage of the vines, the view extends far, and the clear winter air provides visibility to the Odenwald, the Donnersberg, and sometimes even the Vosges. The vineyard houses, hidden by foliage in summer, stand out as prominent points, and the view of the Rhenish Hesse landscape gains an almost picturesque clarity.
The exact date of the 2026 hike will be published by the organizer in good time. Based on experience, the Winter-Weinwanderung takes place on a weekend in February, when the days are getting longer and the first sunny late winter days offer hope for spring. The event is organized by the Verkehrsverein Guntersblum, which traditionally also supports other wine hikes in the region, and by the Alsheim vintners.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in January. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
