Five-day Palatinate Kerwe in the town center between Trifelsland and Südliche Weinstraße
Albersweiler is located in the Queich valley between Annweiler am Trifels and Landau in der Pfalz. The village has around 2,000 inhabitants and is part of the Annweiler am Trifels municipality. Characterized by its location at the entrance to the Palatinate Forest and its long tradition as a wine-growing area, Albersweiler offers an attractive mix of proximity to the forest and wine culture.
The Kerwe – short for Kirchweih – is one of the most important local festivals in the Palatinate. Originally a religious occasion for the consecration of the parish church, it has evolved into a multi-day folk and wine festival. Typical elements include the tapping of the first barrel on Friday, the Kerwerede (Kerwe speech) with a humorous review of the village year, the appearance of the Kerweborsch (Kerwe lads), and the burial of the Kerwepetter (Kerwe effigy) on the final day.
The Albersweiler Kerwe runs from Friday to Tuesday, making it longer than many other Kerwen in the region. The five festival days allow for different focuses: a traditional start on Friday, a festive Saturday with a big evening program, a family Sunday with a Frühschoppen (morning pint), a quieter festival Monday, and a Kehraus (closing day) Tuesday with the Kerwepetter burial. This length reflects the importance of the Kerwe in Albersweiler village life.
Classic Palatinate specialties are served at the festival stands: Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Dampfnudel (steamed bun), Flammkuchen (flatbread pizza). The wine selection from local vintners ranges from dry Rieslings to Burgundian varieties and fruity red wines. Additionally, there is draft beer and non-alcoholic alternatives for families.
The event is organized by the local municipality of Albersweiler together with the local clubs, who are responsible for setup and dismantling, catering, and the festival program. The Kerwe is the social highlight of the late summer season in the Queich Valley and the Annweiler municipality.
