Berlin's most important film festival for contemporary African cinema, every November in Wedding and other venues
AFRIKAMERA was launched in 2007 by the Berlin-based association toucouleur e.V., a collective of German-African cultural practitioners, to make African cinema more visible in the German capital. What began as a small niche format has developed over almost two decades into one of the most important European festivals of its kind – with a clear political claim: to break down the media's reduction of Africa to stereotypes of poverty and conflict, and instead showcase the diversity of contemporary African realities and cinematic languages.
Between 2024 and 2027, the festival is running under a cohesive conceptual arc: BELIEVE (2024), CHANGE (2025), REFLECT (2026), and CREATE (2027). Each edition approaches the question of how filmmakers on the continent and in the diaspora tell their present from a different perspective. REFLECT 2026 emphasizes retrospective, critical-essayistic, and biographical narrative forms.
A key innovation for the 2026 edition is the partnership with the Ladima Foundation, a pan-African foundation for the promotion of female filmmakers. The winner of the Adiaha Award for Best Documentary will be screened at AFRIKAMERA in Berlin – a contribution to the visibility of African women's voices in the international festival circuit.
The main venue for years has been the Silent Green Kulturquartier in Berlin-Wedding (Mitte district): a former crematorium that is now one of the city's most atmospheric cultural centers. In addition, there are other venues in the city, typically including the City Kino Wedding. The films are shown with English or German subtitles and are usually accompanied by Q&As with the filmmakers.
The 2026 edition of AFRIKAMERA is themed REFLECT. It is the third stage of the 2024–2027 thematic cycle (BELIEVE, CHANGE, REFLECT, CREATE), which toucouleur e.V. is presenting together with numerous African and European partners. REFLECT aims at retrospective, biographical, and essayistic narratives in which filmmakers critically examine their own careers, history, and present.
A special role in 2026 is played by the cooperation with the Ladima Foundation: the pan-African foundation supports female filmmakers on the continent and, as part of AFRIKAMERA, presents the winner of the Adiaha Award for Best Documentary to a Berlin premiere audience. Q&As, workshops, and industry talks are also expected.
The exact daily program for 2026 will usually be published in early November 2026 on afrikamera.de. Expected are:
Main venue: Silent Green Kulturquartier, Gerichtstraße 35, 13347 Berlin. Further venues will be announced with the program.
Note: As REFLECT is the third of four thematic blocks, the curatorial line remains closely aligned with previous editions. Specific film titles will be announced by the festival from autumn 2026 onwards.
Silent Green Kulturquartier, Gerichtstraße 35, 13347 Berlin (U-Bahn U6 / U9 Leopoldplatz or S-Bahn Wedding). Other venues in Berlin, depending on the program.
