Improvisationstheater festival in Mainz city center with cabaret, comedy, and open stage.
In just a few years, the Affirmative Festival has established itself as one of the most important improvisation theater gatherings in Rhineland-Palatinate. The association Improvisationstheater Mainz e.V., which operates its own venue, an improv school, and a year-round touring program under the name Die Affirmative in Mainz, is the organizer. The festival bundles the energy of this scene once a year into a dense four-day program.
The venues are spread across the Mainz city center district around the main train station: the Unterhaus, one of the most traditional cabaret stages in the country, serves as the central festival hub, while the Alte Postlager and the Improschule Die Affirmative on Münsterstraße host workshops, late-night jams, and experimental formats. This distribution allows for parallel program lines and gives the festival the character of an urban circuit between stages, bars, and encounters.
In terms of content, the Affirmative Festival presents the entire spectrum of contemporary improvisation: from classic theater sports with point judges to literarily dense long forms like The Harold, from musical improvisation with a live band to solo scenic performances and political cabaret. The stage program is complemented by workshops where festival visitors and amateur improvisers can work with the invited professionals.
The Affirmative Festival is a festival for improvisation insiders and theater newcomers alike. Anyone looking for an evening of uncontrollable stage energy, clever wit, and honest encounters will find exactly the right format here.
The Affirmative Festival 2026 runs from Thursday evening to Sunday night and uses three venues in parallel. The evening main shows take place at the Unterhaus and the Alte Postlager, while workshops and experimental late-night formats are held at the Improschule. The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Thursday festival opening with a gala show of all ensembles, Friday and Saturday thematic show evenings with long forms, short forms, and musical improv, Sunday workshop showings, free jam, and closing ceremony. Tickets for previous editions regularly sold out quickly, early booking recommended.
The final list of invited ensembles and workshop leaders will be communicated in advance via the festival website and the venue channels.
All venues are within walking distance of Mainz Main Station. Public transport connections via numerous bus and tram lines of the Rhein-Main transport association. Park-and-Ride recommended, as parking in the city center is limited.
Tickets for individual performances and festival passes are available via the Affirmative website and at the respective box offices. Workshops require separate registration.
