Pre-Christmas readings in Low German in the Frisian Wangerland
In the Wangerland region, Low German is not just a dialect but a mark of identity. Anyone familiar with older Frisian and the later superimposed Low German knows: this language lives on in daily life, in clubs, and in social gatherings. With Advent op Platt, Wangerland Touristik adds this heritage to the event calendar at a prominent spot – in the quiet month of December, when tourism subsides and locals are among themselves.
The readings take place at various locations in the Wangerland: in churches, local heritage centers (Heimathäuser), cafés, or community halls. The atmosphere is intimate, with the audience often gathered in a circle around a small stage. Low German authors – sometimes retired teachers, sometimes hobby storytellers, sometimes established voices in the Low German literary scene – read Advent stories, anecdotes from village life, fairy tales, and contemplative texts.
Advent op Platt is more than a reading series: it is a meeting place where locals come together, chat over tea or mulled wine, and collectively enter the quiet festive season of the year. Those who understand Low German laugh and fall silent with the speakers; those who don't can let themselves be carried by the sound and rhythm.
Wangerland Touristik typically selects characteristic locations for the readings: the old drainage system villages (Sielorte) of Horumersiel, Schillig, Hooksiel, Tettens, or Hohenkirchen, village heritage centers, and churches with centuries-old stories. The exact dates and locations will be published in autumn 2026.
With Advent op Platt, the region makes a statement for the preservation of Frisian-Low German linguistic culture and for a quiet, spiritual pre-Christmas period beyond the consumer frenzy. An event that combines the best of two worlds: regional identity and Advent contemplation.
The 2026 edition builds on the success of previous years. Wangerland Touristik curates the program in collaboration with the local heritage association and active representatives of Low German language preservation.
The readings usually follow a similar pattern: welcome, several texts with breaks for mulled wine or tea, and discussions afterwards. Those visiting the Wangerland in December will find an authentic, quiet program item here.
The exact 2026 program will be published by Wangerland Touristik in autumn. The structure follows the proven key points:
Various locations in the Wangerland (Horumersiel, Schillig, Hooksiel, Hohenkirchen, Tettens, and others). Exact locations will be announced in autumn 2026.
