Largest Volksfest (traditional festival) of the Lüneburger Heide — August 15th to 23rd, 2026
The Amelinghausen Heather Blossom Festival is the largest and most traditional Volksfest in the entire Lüneburger Heide. In 2026, the 75th edition will be celebrated — an extraordinary anniversary dating back to its founding year of 1951. From Saturday, August 15th, to Sunday, August 23rd, 2026, Amelinghausen transforms into a festival ground.
In mid-August, the heather bloom begins — the spectacular phase when the Erica heather transforms vast areas of the Lüneburger Heide into a violet sea. This natural phenomenon has always been a cause for celebration for the inhabitants of the heath. The Amelinghausen Heather Blossom Festival is the largest and best-known manifestation of this tradition.
Over nine days, the festival attracts thousands of visitors from all over Germany. During this time, Amelinghausen becomes the main hub of the Lüneburger Heide — hotels and guesthouses in the region are booked up far in advance.
The election and crowning of the Heather Queen is a time-honored ritual that has shaped the festival for decades. The Heather Queen represents the region and its tourism brand externally throughout the festival year.
