90 Years of Osnabrück Zoo – Celebration Week with Special Programme and Conservation Actions
Osnabrück Zoo was founded in 1936 and is one of the most traditional zoological gardens in Northwest Germany. Located on the Schölerberg hill and covering an area of around 24 hectares, it provides a habitat for over 2,000 animals from around 300 species. The zoo sees itself as an educational and conservation institution and is involved in international breeding programmes.
The celebration week for the 90th anniversary, from August 9th to 16th, 2026, is the centrepiece of the anniversary year. During this week, special guided tours, activities for families, lectures on conservation topics, and behind-the-scenes insights will be offered. The programme will be continuously updated by Osnabrück Zoo.
A special highlight of the anniversary year is the birthday privilege: visitors receive free admission on their personal birthday – not just during the celebration week, but throughout the entire anniversary year. This is a deliberate invitation for the zoo to welcome visitors from the entire region.
A central theme of the celebration week is the zoo's international conservation projects. With its commitment to endangered big cats, primates, wolves, and bird species, the zoo makes a significant impact far beyond its own grounds. The celebration week makes this work visible to a broad audience.
The complete 2026 programme will be continuously published by Osnabrück Zoo. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years' celebration weeks: daily changing special guided tours, themed activities for families (e.g., insights into animal care, craft activities), lectures on conservation projects in the evenings, and a joint highlight on the last Sunday of the celebration week.
Updates will be published on zoo-osnabrueck.de/zoo-erleben/veranstaltungen.
