Traditional village festival of the Eschenau district in the summer months
The Wunnerfest in Eschenau is one of those small but traditional village festivals that shape the festival calendar of the Westpfalz region during the summer months. Existing since 1989 and thus a fixture of village life for over three decades, the festival has become a firm social meeting point for the residents of the district and their guests. The unusual name "Wunnerfest" — a diminutive form from the Palatinate dialect — refers to the local character of the festival: it is a festival "of the Wunner," meaning the residents, "those from the village.".
Eschenau is one of the districts of the municipality of Sankt Julian, located in the western part of the Kusel district. With about 1,300 inhabitants and several districts, Sankt Julian is a typical rural municipality in the region, characterized by agriculture, forestry, and active club life. Eschenau is one of the smaller districts, but club life is often particularly intense in such places — and the Wunnerfest is an expression of this commitment.
The Wunnerfest follows the proven structure of Palatinate village festivals: the local clubs are responsible for catering, organizing the program, and bearing the financial responsibility. Proceeds go into the club treasuries and thus benefit local youth work, sports promotion, or church activities. The festival program typically includes a festive evening with live music or a DJ, a Sunday morning pint with brass music, a family program with games for children, and possibly a parade or an evening dance program.
As with all Palatinate village festivals, Palatinate specialties are the focus of the catering: grilled bratwurst, Saumagen, Leberknödel, Sauerkraut, homemade cakes and pastries, coffee and cake in the afternoon. Palatinate wine from the northern Palatinate growing regions, beer from regional breweries, and non-alcoholic drinks are part of the offering.
With over three decades of tradition, the Wunnerfest is firmly established in the summer calendar of the Eschenau district. The local clubs — typically the fire department, sports club, and possibly the music club — prepare the festival together. Families from the district, from the municipality of Sankt Julian, and from neighboring municipalities in the Kusel district are expected. The exact date will, as usual, only be announced a few weeks before the festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of a Palatinate village festival:
Opening on the festival weekend by the local mayor. Catering begins by the local clubs. First musical contributions or DJ sets.
Live music or DJ set on the festival stage. Dancing atmosphere in the festival tent. Catering with Palatinate specialties: Bratwurst, Saumagen, Leberknödel, Palatinate wine, beer, and Schorle.
Morning pint with brass music. Family program in the afternoon with games for children. Coffee and cake. Festival winding down in the late afternoon or early evening.
