One of the largest folk and wine festivals on the Rhine – 93rd edition with 9 festival days, marquees, traditional jousting on water, and fireworks.
The Wormser Backfischfest was first officially celebrated in 1933 – as a mix of a folk festival and a wine festival. The name refers to an even older tradition: In late summer, fishermen in Worms used to catch the seasonally available "Backfische" (small fried fish) from the Rhine, which were enjoyed as a delicate specialty, often marinated in beer batter. This old fishing tradition was combined with the region's wine highlights and a folk festival to create a unique format. With its 93rd edition in 2026, the Backfischfest is undisputed the biggest festival event of the year in Worms.
Three large festival marquees are set up on the Kisselswiese: The "Wonnegauer Weinkeller" celebrates the Worms and Rheinhessen wine tradition, the "Stiftskeller" offers classic festival marquee flair, and the "Gaadewirtschaft" provides a modern atmosphere for a younger audience. Each marquee has its own band, its own culinary profile, and its own mix of visitors.
The highlight of every Backfischfest week is the Grand Parade on the first festival Sunday (in 2026: Sunday, August 30th, starting at 2 PM). For over two hours, floats from Worms associations, friendly carnival societies, marching bands, traditional costume groups, and showmen parade through the city center. Afterwards, there's a parade party with DJs on the Kisselswiese.
The sporting highlight is the traditional jousting on water (Fischerstechen) in the Floßhafen on the last festival Sunday (06.09., starting at 2:30 PM) – two teams stand on boats and try to push each other into the water with long poles. An opening bout between the farmer and the farmer's wife is followed by team competitions for the Mayor's Cup. Simultaneously, the "Fischerwääder Kerb," a local fair tradition for the residents of the fishermen's quarter, takes place in the Kisselwiese area.
The grand finale is the spectacular fireworks display on the last festival day (06.09.) – a visual highlight that crowns the nine-day festival. Additionally, a huge amusement park beckons with a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, swing boats, carousels, and all the classic folk festival attractions.
