117 Years of Club Tradition

The Wischhafen Marksmen Association was founded in 1909 and has been a fixture in the club life of the Wischhafen district ever since. Over 117 years of club history document an unbroken tradition – through two world wars, through the post-war period, and through the social upheavals of recent decades. The annual marksmen festival is the highlight of the club's year.

Wischhafen as a Maritime District

Wischhafen is located directly on the Lower Elbe and is the terminus of the Elbe ferry, which operates between Wischhafen and Glückstadt (Schleswig-Holstein). This location gives the town a maritime identity that distinguishes it from the more inland districts of the Kehdinger Marsch. Shipping traffic, water, and dike landscapes shape the scenery.

Three-Day Festival Weekend

The festival weekend follows the proven dramaturgy of North German marksmen festivals. The opening on Friday features the festival opening with the marksmen assembling and marching together to the festival grounds. Saturday brings the classic highlight with the king's shooting, festival parade, and king's proclamation. Sunday concludes with a morning pint, family day, and the king's retrieval. The festival tent, shooting ranges, carousels, food stalls, and beer garden transform the club grounds into a classic festival site.

Embedded in the Kehdinger Festival Scene

The marksmen tradition in the Kehdinger Marsch is deeply rooted. Several districts maintain their own marksmen festivals – from Drochtersen to Wischhafen and Freiburg an der Elbe. This dense festival culture makes the summer in Kehdingen a succession of marksmen weekends that structure the social life of the marshland.
