Traditional fun run on May 1st in Winsen with half marathon and family run distances
The Winsen City and Dike Run has been held on May 1st since the 1980s and is one of the most traditional fun runs in Northern Germany. 2026 will see the 42nd edition. The organizer is TSV Winsen, who, together with numerous helpers and the town of Winsen, organizes the run.
The choice of routes covers all needs: The 5 km run is for beginners and amateur runners, the 10 km run for ambitious fun runners, and the half marathon (21 km) for experienced distance runners. School and family runs complete the offering, making the run an event for the whole family.
The start and finish are in Winsen's city center. The routes lead through the historic center with the castle and marstall, then along the Luhe dike through the landscape protection area. The flat course along the river is particularly attractive for personal bests and popular with the region's half marathon specialists.
May 1st has always been a traditional date for running. On this public holiday, hundreds of runners gather in Winsen – an opening event for the outdoor season for many North German amateur athletes. At the finish area, participants can expect refreshments with fruit, drinks, and regional specialties, plus live music and the award ceremony.
The 42nd edition continues the tradition established in 1984 and is a regular fixture on the North German running calendar. May 1st as a running date marks the start of the outdoor season for many North German amateur athletes.
At the finish area, there will be refreshments, a massage tent, and the award ceremony. The run will be accompanied by live music and a refreshment stand run by TSV.
