Four days of wine festival with Rheinhessen vintners on Bonn's central square in front of the Minster
The Bonner Münsterplatz is one of the most beautiful squares in the Rhineland — a counterpart to the market square on the opposite side of the old town, characterized by the Bonner Münster (12th century, one of Germany's oldest churches, Romanesque and early Gothic) and the famous Beethoven Monument (unveiled in 1845) as its central focal point. For four days in August, the square becomes a wine festival island: stands in a U-shape around the Beethoven Monument, high tables, wooden benches, and evening sounds of live music and acoustic guitar.
The festival's concept focuses not on a colorful mix from all growing regions, but on the classics from the nearby West: Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region (directly south of Mainz), along with contributions from the neighboring Rheingau, Nahe, and Mosel regions. Spearheading the event is Weingut Meyerhof from Flonheim/Rheinhessen — a family winery with its own wine bar, guesthouse, the distinction of "Great Wine Capital Award 2026", and the status of "outstanding wine establishment" by the German Wine Institute (2016). Alongside them are wineries and wine bars curated annually by the Winzergemeinschaft Bonn (Bonn Vintners Association).
Primarily the classics of Rheinhessen white wines: Riesling (Kabinett, Spätlese, dry versions), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Sauvignon Blanc, as well as rosés and reds like Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Prices range from 4 to 7 Euros per glass, depending on the wine classification. Deposit glass system: a stemmed glass is provided with a deposit upon the first purchase and can be used throughout the evening.
Accompanying the wine are food stalls offering classic pairings: Flammkuchen (Tarte Flambée), Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), cheese specialties, bread with spreads, Bratwurst (sausage), crêpes. Live music (mostly acoustic and suitable for cover bands) plays between 7 PM and 10 PM. The atmosphere is relaxed and more subdued than at a Kirmes (funfair) — the wine festival appeals to an audience that wants to enjoy a quiet summer evening with good wine right in front of the Bonn Minster.
The wine festival falls right in the middle of Bonn's high summer and is part of the official Bonn event calendar for 2026, alongside the 17th Balloon Festival in June, Pützchens Markt in early September (one of the largest Rhenish funfairs), and the Street Food Festival Bonn-Beuel in mid-September. Visitors staying in Bonn can combine the wine festival with activities such as a visit to the Beethoven House (Ludwig van Beethoven's birthplace is just a few steps from Münsterplatz), a stroll to the Old Town Hall, or a tour along the Rhine riverbank.
Bonn (approx. 335,000 inhabitants) was the federal capital of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1990 and is now a UN location, a university city, and home to several federal authorities. The old town between Münsterplatz and the market square is compact and easily explorable on foot — ideal for a wine festival weekend. Those visiting the wine festival in the evening can start their day with a walk on the Hofgarten meadow or at Poppelsdorf Palace.
Come on a Thursday or Sunday evening when the festival is more relaxed — Friday and Saturday evenings can get crowded to very crowded, especially between 7 PM and 11 PM. Those who want to deepen their wine knowledge should ask the vintners at the stands about cultivation and the growing region — this is part of the concept and usually well-received.
For years, the festival has been a fixture of the Bonn summer calendar. The Münsterplatz as the central square, the Beethoven Monument as the focal point, and the venerable Bonn Minster in the background create a unique atmosphere.
