Island race across dikes and dunes with Bambini, youth, and 10 km runs
What began as a small island race 25 years ago has developed into one of the characteristic sporting events of the East Frisian Islands. The Westturmlauf attracts runners from all over Germany to Wangerooge every year, seeking the unique experience of running along the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage site.
The routes lead through the island village, along the dikes, and through the typical dune landscape of Wangerooge. The surface varies between asphalt, cobblestones, and firm sandy soil – a varied mix that makes the race a special experience.
The Bambini run offers even the youngest runners the fun of competition. The youth run is aimed at children and teenagers up to 16 years old. The 10-kilometer main race is open to ambitious runners and walkers.
The namesake West Tower is the landmark of Wangerooge, a historical remnant from the 14th century, which now serves as an observation tower. It is regularly in sight during the race and provides orientation.
As a car-free island, Wangerooge can only be reached by ferry from the mainland (Harlesiel) and then by island railway. This makes every race a small adventure that begins with the journey.
The 2026 anniversary edition marks a quarter-century of the Westturmlauf. Organizers and the Tourist Board are planning an expanded supporting program with a celebratory ceremony, awards for all age groups, and a social island evening after the race.
As a car-free island, Wangerooge offers optimal conditions for a nature-oriented running event: no exhaust fumes, well-maintained paths, sea horizons, and the West Tower always in sight.
Exact start times and routes will be published by the organizer HD Sports in spring.
