Grand Mosel Wine Festival with Crowning of the Wine Queen and Parade – Kick-off of the Great Mosel Wine Festivals
The Zeller Schwarze Katz is one of the most famous large vineyard sites in Mosel viticulture. The name spread worldwide in the 19th century, and to this day, the site remains one of the most internationally recognized brands in German wine production. The Weinfest der Zeller Schwarzen Katz is the annual major event with which the town of Zell celebrates its vineyard site and its vintners – and at the same time opens the season of the great Mosel wine festivals.
The festival program spans four days from Friday to Monday. The symbolic opening on Friday evening is the parade of the clubs, followed by the crowning of the new Wine Queen of the Zeller Schwarzen Katz on the main stage. This marks the beginning of the reign of the new representative, who will represent the wine of the site at events throughout the year. On Saturday, an exclusive tasting called "Goldener Genuss" takes place, where selected top wines from Zell's vintners can be sampled by a limited number of participants – a format that particularly attracts wine aficionados from the region.
Parallel to the stage program, street artists, acrobats, jugglers, and bands entertain on the Mosel promenade and the market square. A large Ferris wheel and a classic amusement park with bumper cars, carousels, and smaller rides expand the festival grounds. At the beverage stands, Zell's vintners serve their Rieslings, Müller-Thurgau, and sparkling wines, complemented by regional specialties ranging from bratwurst and tarte flambée to sweet temptations. The festival concludes on Monday with a quieter end featuring a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) and winding down. Admission is free on all four days.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the town of Zell (Mosel) in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Friday parade and crowning of the Wine Queen, Saturday with exclusive tasting and a grand stage program, Sunday main festival day with street artists and family activities, Monday winding down the festival. Bands playing pop, rock, and cover music alternate on the main stage with traditional ensembles and solo artists.
