Salzgitter's Largest Advent Market

As the days grow shorter, fairy lights, fir wreaths, and the stars of the huts will shine in the Lebenstedt pedestrian zone for four weeks. The Weihnachtsmarkt Lebenstedt 2026 will take place daily from November 25 to December 23, making it the longest-running Advent market in all of Salzgitter. Unlike purely weekend markets, it accompanies the city throughout the entire Advent season and is a meeting point for families, commuters, clubs, and guests from the northern Harz foothills.

Opening on November 28

The official opening will take place on Thursday, November 28, 2026, at 5 p.m. at the Monument to City History. The mayor, representatives of CityLebenstedt e.V., and invited choirs will kick off the season with a short stage program and the lighting of the Christmas decorations. From then on, the market will open its doors daily – Mondays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sundays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Huts, Stage, and Family Program

Around four dozen wooden huts will line Fischzug and the market square: mulled wine in local varieties, Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine punch with rum), candied almonds, Schmalzkuchen (traditional doughnuts), crêpes, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), bratwurst from a charcoal grill, and vegetarian alternatives. Regional artisans offer nativity figures, wood carvings from the Erzgebirge, felt crafts, and handmade cards. The stage is reserved for school and church choirs, brass ensembles, and small theater performances.

Families are particularly drawn to the large nativity scene, the Christmas raffle (tickets available in participating shops), and the visits from Santa Claus, who listens to young guests at set times and distributes sweet surprises. A carousel and a small Ferris wheel are also part of the concept.

Connection to Retail

The market works closely with retailers in the Lebenstedt city center. Two late-night shopping Sundays during Advent (dates published by CityLebenstedt e.V.) combine strolling and gift shopping. The market closes on December 23; on Christmas Eve, a final ecumenical service will be held at the market square.
