A summer Friday with culture, music, theatre, and readings until midnight through Stade's old town
Stade is one of the oldest cities in Northern Germany and looks back on an eventful Hanseatic history. The historic old town with its well-preserved half-timbered houses, the Hanseatic Old Harbour, and buildings such as St. Cosmae and Damian Church forms the natural backdrop for the Long Night. The compact size of the old town allows visitors to switch between different program points in just a few minutes.
The Long Night in Stade follows the proven concept of long cultural nights: numerous venues open simultaneously on a single evening, offering a concentrated program. Museums like the Schwedenspeicher Museum or the Kunsthaus showcase special exhibitions, churches host nocturnal concerts, galleries present their artists, and shops become spaces for readings or performances. Stade's cultural scene, comprising associations, independent groups, and institutions, takes centre stage for one night.
Live music is a focal point. Bands, solo artists, choirs, and ensembles perform on several stages, both outdoors and indoors. The spectrum ranges from classical music in churches to jazz and singer-songwriters, as well as rock and folk in restaurants. Street musicians liven up alleys and squares, creating a vibrant atmosphere between the scheduled program points.
Theatre and improvisation groups from Stade and the surrounding area use unusual locations – from backyards to bookshops. Readings by local and national authors complement the literary offerings. Cabaret, storytelling, and short performances add further facets to the evening, surprising visitors during their stroll.
Stade's culinary scene opens its doors wide. Restaurants, cafés, and bars on the Hanseatic Old Harbour, at the Fish Market, and in the old town alleys offer special menus, small concerts, and a lively summer evening atmosphere. Street food stalls complement the offerings for those on the go.
The early evening is also aimed at families with children. As the night progresses, the program shifts to formats for adults. The venues remain open until midnight, after which the night continues in the restaurants and bars.
The 2026 edition falls on the first Friday in July, taking advantage of the long summer evenings for a nocturnal cultural experience. Stade Marketing und Tourismus GmbH coordinates the program of participating institutions and associations.
The exact program, including participating venues, stage acts, and time slots, will be published in early summer 2026.
