Bergisches Adventswochenende on Karlheinz-Stockhausen-Platz
When the first clouds of mulled wine steam rise on the first Advent weekend, from November 28th to 30th, 2026, on Karlheinz-Stockhausen-Platz, the Advent season begins in Bergisches Kürten. The Interessengemeinschaft Kürten e.V., along with numerous volunteers, organizes the traditional Weihnachtsmarkt Kürten (Christmas Market Kürten) — one of the most beautiful village Christmas markets in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis.
Around 30 market stalls will feature regional artisans, small manufacturers, and local businesses:
A small stage will offer a varied program throughout the weekend:
The Christmas market is designed with sustainability in mind:
Karlheinz-Stockhausen-Platz is located in the center of the municipality of Kürten and is named after the famous composer of New Music, who lived and worked in Kürten from 1968 until his death in 2007. Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928–2007) is considered one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, revolutionizing music history with works such as "Helicopter String Quartet," "Gruppen für drei Orchester," and the monumental opera series "Licht." His former home in Kürten now houses the Stockhausen Foundation for Music and can be visited on special occasions.
The Interessengemeinschaft Kürten e.V. (IG Kürten) is an association of Kürten's businesses, clubs, and citizens. In addition to the Christmas market, it organizes other major local events — summer festivals, open Sundays for shopping, and neighborhood festivals. Current information at kuerten-erleben.de.
The municipality of Kürten, with around 20,000 inhabitants, is located in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis, east of Bergisch Gladbach. With its numerous districts (including Kürten-Ort, Bechen, Dürscheid, Olpe, Bilstein, Spitze), it is a typical Bergisches rural municipality, crisscrossed by forests, streams, and small villages. Besides Stockhausen's cultural heritage, Kürten is known for its active hiking scene and diverse club traditions.
