Magical Lights in a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Award-Winning Christmas Market
Goslar is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns. The market square, with its market fountain, carillon, and market church, forms the stage for one of Northern Germany's most renowned Advent markets. The Christmas market itself is clustered around the fountain and in the adjacent alleys, while the neighboring Schuhhof transforms into the Christmas Forest: over 60 real fir trees are erected, illuminated, and decorated, creating a dense forest of lights in the heart of the city.
Around 70 stalls offer mulled wine, Lumumba (hot chocolate with rum), bratwurst, Schmalzkuchen (traditional doughnuts), candied almonds, lard bread, crêpes, and vegetarian specialties. You'll also find stalls selling Christmas decorations, woodwork, jewelry, incense products, Ore Mountains folk art, honey, and spirits. With a total of 160,000 light sources on the fir trees in the Christmas Forest and throughout the city center, the market is one of the most brightly illuminated Advent events in the region and was awarded the 'Excellent European Christmas Market' label in 2025.
The season kicks off on November 25th with a lantern procession, where families parade through the old town with homemade and purchased lanterns. The procession is accompanied by music and a festive opening ceremony on the market square.
The market is open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM, and the Christmas Forest even until 10 PM. Special hours apply on holidays: Christmas Eve from 11 AM to 2 PM, both Christmas Days from 12 PM to 7 PM, and December 30th from 11 AM to 6 PM. This allows for flexible visits to the market, even during a short trip around the holidays.
During Advent, Goslar benefits from its location within the UNESCO World Heritage site and its proximity to the Rammelsberg mine and the Upper Harz region. Advent concerts in the Market Church, city tours focusing on mining history, and excursions to the Rammelsberg complement the market visit, creating a multi-day program.
The 2026 season maintains the established structure. From November 25th to December 30th, the market remains open daily, with clear adjustments around the Christmas holidays and the turn of the year.
The lantern procession on the opening day leads families from the surrounding districts into the old town. A stage program on the market square, the festive welcome, and the joint switching-on of the lights mark the official start of the season.
The special opening hours on Christmas Eve (11 AM to 2 PM), both Christmas Days (12 PM to 7 PM), and December 30th (11 AM to 6 PM) make the market a regular program item for guests spending their holidays in the region.
