Tip
Advent weekends are the busiest. Those who want to enjoy peace and quiet should come during the week or between the years — many stalls are still open then, and the atmosphere is more relaxed.
Cloppenburg Advent Tradition
Like many medium-sized towns in Westphalia, Cloppenburg also has its own Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in the pedestrian zone. It is a firm part of Advent culture for the citizens of the town and the residents of the surrounding Cloppenburg district. With its early opening on the Thursday before the 1st Advent (2026 = November 26) and a long run until December 30, the market covers the entire Advent season and the days between the years.
Five Weeks of Mulled Wine Scent in the City Center
The Cloppenburg pedestrian zone provides the perfect setting: shops on either side, decorative lighting overhead, the scent of fir trees and mulled wine in the air. For over five weeks, stallholders gather with:
- Mulled wine, punch, hot chocolate
- Bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, Schmalzkuchen (traditional fried pastry)
- Christmas bakery from the region — gingerbread, stollen, cookies
- Arts and crafts with gift ideas — jewelry, wood, ceramics, textiles
- Advent decorations and nativity figures
Activities for Children and Families
The Cloppenburg Christmas Market is designed to be family-friendly: carousels, activities with St. Nicholas, childcare on weekends, hands-on stations. Schools and clubs perform on various days with choir performances or small musical contributions — a colorful mix of commerce and volunteer engagement.
Regional and Authentic
Unlike the very large tourist Christmas markets, Cloppenburg has the size of a regional city Christmas market: manageable, cozy, personal. You often know the stallholders from the previous year, the atmosphere is warm, and the mulled wine is affordable. It is precisely this authenticity that constitutes its charm — and distinguishes Cloppenburg from any generic big-city market.
