Three-day district festival on the Alter Markt Wattenscheid from June 12th to 14th, 2026 with Schlager, Pop, Jazz, and Rock, and Sunday shopping
Wattenscheid is Bochum's largest district and was an independent city with its own town hall, identity, and self-confidence until its incorporation in 1975. This independence is still palpable today β and nowhere more evident than at the Wattenscheid Summer Festival, the central district event on the Alter Markt, from June 12th to 14th, 2026.
The organizer is the Werbegemeinschaft Wattenscheid e.V. (WG WAT), the local traders' and business association that has been managing district marketing for decades. Alongside the Sparkasse Cup, the Wattenscheid Christmas Market, and several smaller events, the Summer Festival is the most important format of the year β a district festival with high identity value that also attracts non-Wattenscheid residents from Bochum-Mitte and neighboring towns.
The Alter Markt Wattenscheid is the historical center of the district β a square with a grown inner-city identity, surrounded by pedestrian zones and retail. During the Summer Festival, it transforms into a circular festival mile with a central stage, market stalls, food and drink areas, and a family zone. The surrounding buildings (Wattenscheid Town Hall, St. Gertrud Church, traditional commercial buildings) form the architectural backdrop.
The stage program caters to a broad spectrum of tastes and aims at the district's multi-generational audience:
The specific band list for 2026 will be announced by the Werbegemeinschaft shortly before the event on wg-wat.de. The 2024 program (including Party-Fraktion Wattenscheid, Shanty Chor Wattenscheid, Christopher Cassidy & David Minchin, NEON, SALVA & L.N.G. Band) provides a good impression of the usual mix.
Sunday is designed as Family and Health Day: stage shows for children, a health fair with stands from local practices and therapists, craft activities, a carousel, and a prize wheel. This program structure distinguishes the Wattenscheid Summer Festival from purely musical district festivals and strengthens the Werbegemeinschaft's family orientation.
Sunday, June 14th, is also a Sunday shopping day (shops open 1 PM - 6 PM). This combination of district festival and retail is the economic logic behind many Westphalian district festivals: the Werbegemeinschaft benefits from increased footfall in member businesses, and visitors combine the festival and shopping in one outing.
The food at the Summer Festival follows the typical Ruhr area district festival standard: Thai street food, pizza, currywurst, cocktails, regional specialties. Stalls are partly run by Wattenscheid restaurateurs and partly by traveling showmen. The mix of international cuisine and local snacks reflects Wattenscheid's diverse migrant population.
Wattenscheid (approx. 73,000 inhabitants) is located in western Bochum on the border with Gelsenkirchen, Herne, and Essen. It was an independent city until 1975, and a district of Bochum since then. The identification of Wattenscheid residents with their district is exceptionally high β a dedicated district newspaper (Wattenscheid-Zeitung), its own business association, its own clubs and festivals. The Summer Festival is an expression of this identity and, at the same time, its most important public manifestation.
With the Summer Festival 2026, the Werbegemeinschaft Wattenscheid presents the central district event of the year β three days, a broad stage program, family orientation, and close cooperation with local retailers through the Sunday shopping event.
Friday is the opening and dance music day with dance/pop programs for the younger audience. Saturday is the main multi-generational program day with a broad musical spectrum. Sunday is Family Day with a children's program, a health fair, and Sunday shopping.
Specific bands and acts for 2026 will be communicated by the Werbegemeinschaft Wattenscheid on wg-wat.de in the weeks leading up to the event.
