Four-day Schützenfest with funfair and dance tent on Wardenburg's market square
Schützenfeste (marksmen's festivals) are deeply rooted in northern Lower Saxony. In Wardenburg, the traditional Schützenverein combines the classic elements of marksmen's customs – king's shooting, parade, proclamation – with the character of a large funfair. This combination distinguishes the Wardenburger Schützenfest from many smaller marksmen's festivals and makes it a regional attraction in the southern Ammerland.
From Friday to Monday, Wardenburg's market square becomes the festival mile. Around 30 stands and rides create a funfair atmosphere. The highlight among the rides is the Break Dance by the Mondorf family – a classic of the North German showman scene. In the Caesars Dancing Hall tent, live bands and DJ sets provide entertainment late into the night.
A special feature of the Wardenburger Schützenfest is the support from the Oldenburg Showman Association. The organized showmen ensure that the festival reaches its previous quality and quantity standards and – in terms of the variety of stands – is compared to the traditional Oldenburg Kramermarkt. This marks the return of a tradition that seemed endangered in the years after the pandemic.
The Wardenburger Schützenverein, which preserves the customs of marksmen's traditions in the community, is the organizer of the festival. King's shooting and proclamation are the historical pillars of the festival, complemented by parades, battalion roll calls, and social events in the dance tent. With the Schützenfest, the club also emphasizes the importance of volunteer-driven festival culture in the community.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Wardenburger Schützenverein in spring and summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Friday opening with keg tapping and first dance evening, Saturday family day with children's program and festival ball, Sunday bird shooting, king's proclamation, and grand parade, Monday morning pint and king's dinner followed by winding down.
The Oldenburg Showman Association ensures a diverse offering of showmen and sales stands, which matches the Kramermarkt of the city of Oldenburg in variety and standard.
