Ten days of sustainability, future issues, and dialogue culture — Festival of the Zukunftsrat Lüneburg
The Wandelwoche Lüneburg is more than a classic event series. It is a civil society platform where various Lüneburg actors contribute to the question of how a sustainable lifestyle can be concretely shaped. The Zukunftsrat Lüneburg, a local network of initiatives, associations, educational institutions, church groups, foundations, and committed individuals, is the driving force. Each participating organization designs its own program item — the festival is thus a bottom-up format that makes the diversity of the sustainability movement in Lüneburg visible.
Each edition of the Wandelwoche is dedicated to a specific thematic focus. In 2026, the motto is 'Culture of Respectful Dialogue'. With this, the Zukunftsrat responds to the increasing polarization of societal debates and focuses on the question of how democratic exchange on future issues can be conducted constructively. The program items for 2026 will address the motto in various forms: in lectures on the culture of debate and discourse ethics, in workshops on non-violent communication, in dialogue formats between different generations, and in cultural contributions that highlight the common ground between different ways of life.
Over the ten days, around 50 to 80 individual program items will take place. Lectures and panel discussions impart knowledge and foster debates, while workshops offer practical, hands-on opportunities on topics such as repair, permaculture, alternative mobility, climate-friendly cooking, or solidarity-based economics. Film nights present current documentaries, city walks showcase places of transformation in Lüneburg, and cultural contributions — concerts, readings, exhibitions — round off the program. Many events are free or by donation; individual workshops have a fee.
The Zukunftsrat Lüneburg was founded to network the numerous local actors of the sustainability and transformation movement. The Wandelwoche is its most visible annual format. Beyond the event series, the council maintains year-round exchange and initiates projects for urban development, the energy transition, the educational landscape, and Lüneburg's cultural diversity.
As in previous years, the Wandelwoche 2026 will offer a dense program with a focus on weekends and individual highlights during the week. The opening and closing events will provide thematic brackets, with lectures, workshops, city talks, and cultural contributions distributed in between. Local initiatives, Leuphana University, church communities, educational institutions, and associations will design program items. The motto 'Culture of Respectful Dialogue' will run like a common thread through the program — many events will address the question of how disagreements can be constructively resolved.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the Zukunftsrat in October. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
