Walpurgis in the Harz — A Special Magic
Walpurgis Night — the night of April 30th to May 1st — holds special significance in the Harz Mountains. According to ancient legend, witches gather on the Brocken mountain on this night for a grand dance with the devil. This legend has made the Harz a stronghold of Walpurgis customs, and large Walpurgis festivals are celebrated in many places throughout the region. Goslar, as a historic imperial city at the foot of the Harz, holds a special position.
Motto 2026 — “Goslar Entirely Bewitched”
The 2026 Goslar Walpurgis Festival is aptly themed “Goslar Entirely Bewitched,” playfully referencing the old legend. On the historic market square — surrounded by the Town Hall, Market Church, and the half-timbered houses of the old town — the medieval city center transforms into a stage for a modern Walpurgis festival, where witches, devils, music, and light come together.
Program Starts at 3 PM
The program begins in the afternoon and builds to its climax over the evening. The opening act is Fabula Furiosa — a music group with a medieval flair, igniting the Walpurgis atmosphere with powerful live music. Following them, the group In Good Company presents its characteristic sound with mandolin, banjo, and flute — a musical ensemble blending Irish-folkloric elements with original compositions.
DJ Stevie G and Stürmer Deluxe in the Evening
From 6:30 PM, DJ Stevie G takes the stage, setting the right mood for Walpurgis Night with his set. At 8:30 PM, the live band Stürmer Deluxe performs, marking the musical peak of the festival with their program.
Light Show at the Wallanlagen
One of the most impressive program elements is the light show at Goslar's Wallanlagen (city fortifications). On Walpurgis Night, the historic city defenses are bathed in a spectacular play of light — a staging that makes the medieval architecture appear in a completely new light and underscores the mythical atmosphere of Walpurgis Night.
Free Admission and Popular Format
Admission to the Walpurgis Festival is free. The festival is aimed at locals, tourists, and all Walpurgis enthusiasts from the entire Harz region and beyond. Witch costumes are explicitly welcome and add to the atmosphere.
