Late autumn wine event in the historic Wachenheim wine cellars with guided tastings and special tours
When visiting Palatinate wine villages, you usually only see the visible side: wineries, wine shops, courtyards. But beneath each of these villages lies a second world — the wine cellars where the wine ferments, is stored, matures, and is finally bottled. In Wachenheim, these cellars are particularly impressive: historic vaults from the 18th and 19th centuries, tuns made of old Palatinate oak, stainless steel tanks, and modern bottling facilities coexist in a confined space.
Wachenheimer Unterwelten opens this normally closed-off world for one day. The participating wineries offer small cellar tours with the vintner or an oenologist — usually with tastings directly from the barrel or tank. Visitors learn the principles of vinification, see how the wines mature, and can taste young wines that are not yet bottled.
Wachenheimer Unterwelten appeals to a different audience than the big summer festivals: people who want to know more about wine, who want to understand the craft behind the enjoyment, who want to talk to the vintners. The format is more intimate, more technical, and deeper — and for many regular guests, therefore precisely the most valuable date in the Palatinate event calendar.
November is a quieter time in the Palatinate. The harvest is over, the first young wines have finished fermenting, and the long period of maturation begins in the cellars. It is precisely during this phase that Wachenheimer Unterwelten takes place — a fitting date, as the cellars are full now and the vintners have time to dedicate to their visitors.
The 2026 edition follows the proven format: one day, several participating wineries, cellar tours with tastings from barrel and tank, personal conversations with the vintners.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years.
The list of participating Wachenheim wineries will be announced through official channels before the event.
