Burgdorfer Volks- und Schützenfest

Marksmen's Tradition Since 1593

The Burgdorfer Schützengesellschaft von 1593 is among the oldest marksmen's associations in Lower Saxony. Over 430 years of club history shape its identity: here, customs are not staged, but lived. The annual Volks- und Schützenfest is the central date in the club's calendar.

Pre-Festival Program

Before the festival weekend, several practice shoots traditionally take place – a firm part of club life and preparation for the bird shooting. Dates 2026: Tuesday, June 9, Tuesday, June 16, and Friday, June 19. Additionally, the Großer Zapfenstreich takes place on Spittaplatz – a ceremonial military ceremony that solemnly ushers in the marksmen's festival.

Four Days of Festival Weekend

The main festival runs from Thursday, June 25, to Sunday, June 28, 2026. In the festival tent at the Schützenhaus, live music (e.g., cover bands, Schlager artists, or party bands) is played. The program is complemented by a Rock & Roll amusement ride and gastronomic stands. Classic components include:

• Thursday: Opening and assembly of the marksmen
• Friday: Club evening, live music in the festival tent
• Saturday: Bird shooting, grand festival parade, proclamation of the king
• Sunday: Festival banquet, family program, winding down

Festival Tent and Town Center

The Schützenhaus at Bleiche 7 is centrally located in Burgdorf. During the festival, the Schützengesellschaft, with its uniforms, flags, and music corps, shapes the cityscape. Visitors to Burgdorf can easily combine attending the festival with a stroll through the town.

Großer Zapfenstreich on Spittaplatz

The Großer Zapfenstreich on Spittaplatz is a special program item leading up to the festival. With march music, flag bearers, and a solemn ritual, it ushers in the actual festival days – an element of lived tradition that only a few marksmen's associations still practice in this form.
