118 kilometers cycling tour through the East Frisian fen landscape – every two years
The municipality of Großefehn lies in the heart of the East Frisian fen landscape – a unique cultural landscape created in the 17th and 18th centuries through peat extraction and the construction of drainage canals. The scenery is characterized by straight fen canals, along whose banks villages are lined up as elongated rows of houses, as well as the hedge landscapes typical of the region. Cycling through this landscape offers a natural backdrop that can only be found in this form in East Frisia.
The Van Dörp to Dörp tour, at 118 kilometers, is a sporty but not extreme route – experienced amateur cyclists can complete it in one day, and ambitious families with older children can split it into two stages. The route leads through:
The organizers emphasize the character of an experience tour, not a race. There is no official timing, no significant entry fees, and no ranking. Instead, participants choose their own pace, stop at refreshment stations in the villages to eat, drink, and chat with other cyclists. Several stations along the route offer free or inexpensive snacks, local specialties like Mehlbeutel (flour dumplings) or warm soup, and East Frisian tea.
Van Dörp to Dörp is organized every two years – the Großefehn Tourismus GmbH alternates with other major events. After the 2024 tour, 2026 is again the year for the cycling tour. The next edition after 2026 is not expected until 2028 – so anyone who misses the tour in 2026 will have to wait two years.
The 2026 edition builds on the success of previous years. The organizers expect several hundred participants from East Frisia, Bremen, Münsterland, and the northern Dutch provinces.
The detailed program for 2026 (start time, stations, route) will be published by the organizer in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
The starting point will be announced by the organizer shortly before the event. The 118 km circular route leads through the municipalities of Großefehn, Aurich, Wiesmoor, and neighboring fen areas.
Registration via Großefehn Tourismus GmbH (www.grossefehn-tourismus.de/veranstaltungen). A small participation fee, which is partly credited as a refreshment contribution at the stations.
Arrival by bike is possible (good cycle path connections from Aurich, Emden, Leer). Arrival by train to Aurich station (via Sande/Emden), then Großefehn by bike in 30 minutes.
