Piano open-air on the historic market square of Bernkastel-Kues
The Mosel Musikfestival, one of the largest classical music festivals in the Mosel region, fills Mosel abbeys, castles, churches, and concert halls every summer with a program of classical and chamber music. With the Urban Piano Project, the festival goes one step further, opening up classical music to public city and market life. Concepts such as Open Piano Days, Roadshows, or Plein-Air Piano have become established in many European cities in recent years; the Mosel variant implements the format with a recognizable festival signature.
Bernkastel-Kues, with its famous medieval market square and half-timbered ensemble, is the most symbolically important stop on the tour. On the day of the event, a grand piano is placed on the market square; pianists – festival guests, scholarship holders, or young musicians – play shorter programs throughout the day, ranging from Bach to Chopin and Debussy, as well as jazz improvisations or contemporary piano music. Those who wish can stay for an entire piece, while others can listen as they pass by.
This format runs parallel to the main concert program of the Mosel Musikfestival in the region's halls, abbeys, and churches. Visitors to the Urban Piano concert in Bernkastel-Kues can combine the afternoon with a stroll along the Mosel, a visit to the St. Nikolaus Hospital, or a wine tasting in the market square. A subsequent stop for the Urban Piano Project this season will be in Wittlich, also in the city center.
