Short film festival for micro-budget filmmakers with a new children's cinema section in 2026 and a free workshop program at Culture Shocks Wolfsburg
The Underdog Film Festival Wolfsburg will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Culture Shocks at Kleiststraße 39. The focus is on short films by independent micro-budget filmmakers – a festival that deliberately puts outsiders, debut works, and experimental pieces at its center.
In 2026, the festival is expanding its profile: a new children's cinema section is being introduced, while the feature film section will be dropped. Accompanying the screening day, a free workshop program will run on the days before and after. Tattoo artists on site will round off the festival atmosphere.
The Underdog Film Festival positions itself as a platform for filmmakers who work with small budgets and great passion. Instead of Hollywood viewing habits, the festival focuses on subjects, styles, and voices that receive little visibility in commercial cinema. The jury not only assesses storytelling craft but also originality and courage.
The focus in 2026 is clearly on short films — from animations and documentaries to fiction and experimental works. Submissions come from Germany, Europe, and overseas; many entries originate from film schools, independent collectives, and self-made productions.
With the children's cinema section, the festival opens up to families for the first time in 2026. Age-appropriate short films will be shown — animated, entertaining, with a child-friendly narrative style. The section will be programmed during the day and will create its own focal point within the festival.
The free workshop program on the days before and after the screening day is aimed at emerging filmmakers and interested individuals: screenwriting, camera, editing, sound design, marketing. Workshops are led by filmmakers who themselves come from the independent scene.
Culture Shocks at Kleiststraße is a self-managed cultural venue and offers the ideal backdrop for the festival: raw, urban, anti-conventional. A bar, on-site tattoo artists, seating areas, and short film loops in the foyer create a club-like atmosphere.
Through the FilmFreeway platform, the festival accepts submissions from all over the world — an indication of the growing international visibility of a small but distinguished festival.
