About Trierer Rosenmontagszug

The Trierer Rosenmontagszug is the largest Carnival parade in the Trier region and one of the most traditional Rose Monday parades in Rhineland-Palatinate. The parade starts punctually at 11:11 AM in Medardstraße in Trier-Süd and proceeds through the city centre to Trier-Nord. The largest crowds gather between Neustraße and Porta Nigra. A large stage is set up at Hauptmarkt; Südwestrundfunk broadcasts the events live. Afterwards, the festivities move to the SWT-Arena for the After-Parade Party. The organiser is the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Trierer Karneval (ATK).

Trier Carnival is part of the Rhenish-Mosellan Carnival tradition, which dates back to the 19th century. The Rose Monday parade is its highlight: floats and walking groups from Trier Carnival clubs, ATK member clubs, schools, friendly clubs from the Trier surrounding area, and guest clubs march in a procession several kilometres long through the city centre.

In terms of content, the parade combines classic Carnival elements — prince and princess, guards, funken, floats — with local political and social satire. In particular, the motto floats from individual clubs sharply comment on local politics and supra-regional topics. Tens of thousands of sweets are thrown into the audience — the traditional "Kamelle" rain.

The SWR live broadcast ensures the Trierer Rosenmontagszug receives nationwide attention. After the parade ends, Carnival moves to the city centre pubs and the SWT-Arena in northern Trier, where the After-Parade Party runs from 3 PM onwards.
