Advent Calendar in the Guinness Book of Records
The Tönninger Weihnachtsereignis is more than a Christmas market – it is the lovingly staged world's largest Advent calendar. The Historic Warehouse on Tönning harbour, a long building from the 17th century measuring 77.5 meters in length, becomes a walk-in Advent calendar during the Advent season: 24 windows and doors are symbolically opened daily in a fixed sequence. The Guinness World Record for the longest Advent calendar in the world is officially registered.
Market on Two Floors
The warehouse opens its doors to visitors on all four Advent weekends: handmade goods on two floors, regional specialities from the Eiderstedt peninsula, mulled wine, Christmas baking, and the Christmas assortment from local craftspeople. The stalls are closely arranged, creating a particularly intimate market atmosphere – far from the overcrowded Christmas markets of the big cities.
Programme and Atmosphere
The programme changes from weekend to weekend:
- Live Music: Choir singing, Christmas jazz, brass quintets on alternating days
- Tombola – traditionally on Sundays at 12 p.m.
- Visit from St. Nicholas on St. Nicholas' weekend with gifts for children
- Face painting and crafts in a dedicated family zone
- Christmas carol singing in the main hall
Location: Tönning, Nordfriesland District
Tönning is an old trading town on the Eider river on the Eiderstedt peninsula in the Nordfriesland district. The warehouse on the harbour is a reminder that Tönning was one of Schleswig-Holstein's most important ports in the 17th and 18th centuries. The town itself is now a popular destination in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park – the Christmas event is therefore often combined with an Advent weekend on the North Sea coast.
