The largest Volksfest in the Regensburg district since 1852
The Tangrintel-Volksfest originated in 1852 as an agricultural festival. Today, according to the town of Hemau, it is the largest Volksfest in the Regensburg district, with a festival area of around 12,000 square meters and a multi-day festival program. The name "Tangrintel" derives from the old Tangrintel-Gau, a historical settlement area on the Jura high plateau in the northern Upper Palatinate.
The festival traditionally starts on Friday with a parade through Hemau's old town – with a brewery carriage and festival tent band. Upon arrival at the festival grounds, the mayor performs the beer tapping ceremony, officially opening the festivities. Free beer in limited quantities is part of the opening tradition.
A special feature is the Farmers' Day on the last day of the festival (traditionally Tuesday), which commemorates the agricultural roots of the event. Farmers from the surrounding area meet in the festival tent for a morning pint and lunch. The brewery also invites the annual meeting of the innkeepers.
In addition to classic Volksfest fare – bratwurst, Steckerlfisch, cheese stalls, pizza – the festival grounds also offer regional specialties such as "Drahdewixpfeiferl," a twisted pastry particularly popular in the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria. The festival tent offers catering in classic Bavarian style with beer from the Riedenburger brewery or other local providers.
Hemau is a town in the Regensburg district (AGS 09375), located on the Tangrintel high plateau in the Altmühltal Nature Park. With around 9,000 inhabitants, Hemau is a small town, but its Volksfest serves a supra-regional catchment area between Regensburg, Beilngries, and Riedenburg.
The traditional Tangrintel-Volksfest will likely run from Friday, August 28, to Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The festival schedule follows the proven five-day sequence with the brewery parade and beer tapping ceremony on Friday evening, the main festival day on Saturday with lively activity in the beer tent, the festival Sunday with a church service, family program, and roast ox, the festival Monday with children's day and reduced ride prices, and Farmers' Day on festival Tuesday.
The 12,000 m² festival grounds host a beer tent with live bands, carousels (bumper cars, classic fairground rides), shooting galleries, classic festival stalls, and a wide selection of food vendors. The event is organized by the town of Hemau in cooperation with the festival caterer and local breweries.
Exact dates for 2026 will be published by the town of Hemau a few weeks before the festival begins.
